Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robot tested for factory work at Hyundai plant

Boston Dynamics showcased its all‑electric Atlas humanoid robot on the factory floor of Hyundai Motor Group’s new Metaplant in Savannah, Georgia. The robot performed sequencing tasks such as sorting roof‑rack components, marking its first deployment outside the laboratory and a step toward routine industrial use.

Hyundai plans to integrate Atlas into its Georgia plant by 2026 and aims for broader deployment across its U.S. operations by 2028, using AI foundation models to teach the robot a range of factory duties. Boston Dynamics expects additional customers, including Google DeepMind, to adopt the technology in the following year. The partnership reflects growing pressure on manufacturers to address labor shortages and demand more flexible automation, as highlighted by the World Economic Forum.

The Atlas upgrade, unveiled in April 2024, features a sleek all‑electric design and Nvidia‑powered AI processors, allowing it to learn tasks through experience rather than pre‑programmed scripts. While the demonstration demonstrates technical progress, its real‑world impact will depend on safety, reliability, and cost‑effectiveness when working alongside human workers.
