Boston Dynamics Atlas robot masters football moves in new demo

Boston Dynamics released a video showing its humanoid robot Atlas learning to play football by watching footage from World Cup matches. Using reinforcement‑learning techniques, the robot observed player movements, body positions and reactions, then replicated kicks, dribbles, balance exercises and even celebratory gestures such as raising its arms after a simulated goal. Atlas relies on proprioception to adjust its posture and grip in real time, allowing smoother, more natural motions than earlier pre‑programmed routines.

The demonstration is part of a Hyundai‑sponsored campaign that ties the robot’s training to the upcoming 2026 World Cup and hints at possible involvement of the quadruped robot Spot at future events. Boston Dynamics says the project tests coordination, speed and adaptability needed for future warehouse, construction and manufacturing tasks.
