Boston Dynamics' Spot robot deployed at Mariana Minerals copper mine

Mariana Minerals has deployed Boston Dynamics’ Spot quadruped robot at its Copper One-Mine near Moab, Utah, to automate inspection tasks and enhance safety. The robot traverses the 10,000-acre site, including pits, heap leach pads, and extraction lines, to collect continuous data.

Equipped with thermal, acoustic, and visual sensors, Spot transmits real-time information regarding equipment temperature, unusual noises, and gauge readings directly into Mariana OS, the company’s proprietary software platform. This integration allows for predictive maintenance, enabling the team to identify potential mechanical failures or overheating equipment before they cause downtime. By replacing manual foot patrols with autonomous data collection, the company aims to reduce human exposure to hazardous environments and move toward fully autonomous mining operations.
