Boston Dynamics unveils advanced robotic hand for Atlas humanoid
Boston Dynamics has unveiled a next-generation robotic hand, designated as GR3, designed for its Atlas humanoid robot to enhance industrial manipulation capabilities. Moving beyond simple grasping, the new hand features 13 degrees of freedom (DOF) compared to the previous 7, allowing for more complex tasks such as using power tools, rotating small parts within the hand, and operating triggers on drills or welding torches.
In a strategic design choice, the company opted for a four-finger configuration rather than a human-like five-finger structure. This decision aims to optimize mass production, reduce power consumption, and lower costs while maintaining durability. Developers noted that removing the pinky finger reduces mechanical complexity without significantly sacrificing essential functionality for industrial environments.
The new architecture prioritizes robustness and serviceability, utilizing modular components that can be replaced independently. This approach is intended to support large-scale manufacturing, with the company aiming for the capacity to produce up to 100,000 hands per year. The system also incorporates tactile sensing technology and utilizes ‘sim-to-real’ training methods to refine precision and adaptability.
