Boston Mayor Michelle Wu faces DHS backlash over ICE parking dispute

A dispute has emerged between Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and federal authorities regarding the use of private property for immigration enforcement. The conflict began after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sought to lease approximately 249 contiguous parking spaces in the Boston area to support its operations.

Mayor Wu announced plans to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to identify private property owners who have expressed interest in providing these spaces to the agency. While Wu acknowledged that the city lacks the legal authority to block private citizens from leasing their property to federal law enforcement, she stated that such cooperation was not a way to make the community safer.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responded sharply on social media, labeling the Mayor “pro-criminal” and accusing her administration of attempting to intimidate Bostonians. DHS stated that private citizens should be allowed to permit federal law enforcement onto their own property without facing threats from local officials. The controversy has sparked significant public debate regarding the boundaries between local opposition to immigration policy and the interference with private citizens' legal business activities.
