Boston officials warn of low-clearance bridge risks ahead of move-in day

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has issued a warning to drivers of large vehicles ahead of the Greater Boston college move-in day on September 1, 2026. Authorities are urging drivers of moving trucks and vans to avoid the River Roads—specifically Storrow Drive, Soldiers Field Road, and Memorial Drive—due to low-clearance bridges with heights as low as nine feet.

Vehicles exceeding these height restrictions risk becoming wedged under bridges, a phenomenon locally referred to as ‘storrowing.’ Such incidents necessitate emergency responses and frequently cause significant traffic delays by reducing roadways to a single lane.

DCR Commissioner Nicole LaChapelle emphasized the goal of ensuring visitor safety and educating new residents. To prevent these accidents, high-visibility ‘CARS ONLY’ signs have been installed at road entrances. Drivers of tall vehicles are advised to use alternative routes, including the Massachusetts Turnpike, Beacon Street, or Commonwealth Avenue.
