Boston Red Sox face offseason decisions on Rutschman and Duran
Following an early playoff exit, the Boston Red Sox face significant roster and contract decisions heading into the 2027 season. A primary focus is catcher Adley Rutschman, whom the team acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in August in exchange for catcher Carlos Narváez, prospects Anthony Eyanson, Kyson Witherspoon, Enddy Azocar, and a player to be named later.
Rutschman remains under team control through 2027, but his limited production in 15 games—hitting .170 with one home run—leaves the front office with a decision regarding a long-term extension. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow noted that Rutschman’s future will be handled privately, despite the player earning the trust of the pitching staff and clubhouse.
Additionally, outfielder Jarren Duran has emerged as a major trade candidate. After an All-Star MVP season in 2024, Duran’s production declined in 2026, resulting in a .207 batting average and 0.4 rWAR. With arbitration projections suggesting a salary exceeding $11 million for 2027, the club must weigh his high upside and team control against his recent performance.
