Boston Red Sox sign veteran catcher Tomás Nido to minor league deal

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a minor league contract with veteran catcher Tomás Nido. The 32-year-old, a native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, is expected to report to Triple-A Worcester to provide organizational depth behind the plate.

Nido, known primarily for his defensive skills and tenure with the New York Mets, most recently spent the early part of the 2026 season in the Detroit Tigers organization before being released in July. While he is considered a glove-first catcher with elite framing abilities, his career major league batting average stands at .215.

The signing addresses catching depth for Boston following injuries to Adley Rutschman, who has been dealing with elbow issues. The Red Sox currently roster Connor Wong and Mickey Gasper alongside Rutschman.
