Boston Red Sox use goggles to manage intense playoff celebrations

The Boston Red Sox have developed a unique tradition to manage their intense postseason celebrations. As the team progresses through the MLB playoff rounds, they receive shipments of 100 pairs of protective goggles from a kit supplier to protect players' eyes from the high-velocity champagne spraying common during victories.

Clubhouse manager Tom McLaughlin, who has been with the team for over 40 years, noted that celebrations have become significantly more intense compared to the 1980s. The festivities occur at every major milestone, including clinching a playoff spot, winning the wildcard round, and advancing through the divisional and championship series.

To protect clubhouse property such as furniture, televisions, and audio equipment from liquid damage, staff spend approximately two hours installing protective plastic sheeting before celebrations begin. Former player Curtis Granderson described the atmosphere as a “fun water gun fight,” though noted the stinging sensation champagne can cause when it hits skin or wounds.
