Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians authorize first strike in 145-year history

Musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) have authorized a strike, marking the first such action in the ensemble’s 145-year history. The Boston Musicians’ Association announced the vote following a breakdown in negotiations regarding a new three-year collective bargaining agreement.

Tensions between the union and BSO management have escalated since March, following the decision to terminate music director Andris Nelsons next summer. The union stated that management has failed to restore trust or offer a fair contract and has declined requests to bring in a professional mediator.

In a potential sign of progress, the BSO and the musicians have agreed to extend their current contract for 48 hours, moving the expiration deadline to Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. BSO CEO Chad Smith stated that the extension is pending a ratification vote by the union and the players’ committee. The orchestra is currently scheduled to begin its new season on September 17.
