Boston to implement safety upgrades at site of Louisa Gag's death

The City of Boston will begin construction next week to implement safety improvements at the intersection of Tremont, Parker, and Terrace Streets in the Mission Hill neighborhood. The upgrades follow the fatal collision in July involving Louisa Gag, a 36-year-old City Hall employee and transportation planner who was struck by a truck while cycling.

Interim Chief of Streets Chris Osgood stated the project uses “quick-build” materials to reconfigure the corridor and reduce the likelihood and severity of future crashes. Key changes include the creation of a parking-protected bike lane segment between Terrace and Parker Streets, achieved by shifting curbside parking closer to the center of the roadway.

Additional measures include improving visibility at crosswalks by removing a parking spot on the south side of Tremont Street and using tan paint to extend curb space at the Parker and Tremont intersection. The city will also restrict eastbound left turns from Tremont onto northbound Parker Street. The project is expected to take approximately one week to complete, weather permitting.
