Bot traffic costs $37 billion in annual U.S. ad spend

Automated bot traffic now accounts for 53% of all web traffic, marking the first sustained period where machines outnumber humans online. While this includes beneficial search crawlers and monitoring tools, malicious bots constitute approximately 40% of web traffic.

In the realm of programmatic advertising, this surge presents a significant financial challenge. An estimated $37 billion in U.S. programmatic ad spend is associated with invalid traffic annually. Beyond the immediate loss of budget through fake clicks and leads, bot traffic creates a bidding problem for automated pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns. When bots trigger fake conversions, they provide inaccurate data that trains advertising algorithms, such as Google’s, to optimize for non-human engagement.

The rise of generative AI has further complicated the issue by making sophisticated bots cheaper to produce. These modern bots can mimic human behaviors, including scrolling, typing cadence, and form-filling, allowing them to bypass standard security filters.
