Botanists discover new plant species in unexpected locations

Botanists are increasingly discovering new plant species in unexpected locations, including private gardens, roadside thickets, and neglected landscapes. Scientific evidence suggests that unidentified or overgrown plants may occasionally be remarkable new species rather than mere weeds.

An estimated 100,000 plant species have yet to be formally described and named by science. While researchers officially name approximately 2,500 new plants each year, the urgency to identify these species is growing due to biodiversity loss. Research involving over 200 scientists from 102 institutions indicates that nearly half of all known flowering plants are currently threatened with extinction.
