Botoșani reduces public transport costs with electric buses
The introduction of electric buses in Botoșani has significantly reduced public transport operational costs and local budget subsidies. Following the replacement of diesel vehicles with a fleet of 68 electric buses—funded by a European project—the cost per kilometer dropped from 23 lei in June to 17.07 lei in July.
Local subsidies allocated to the operator, Eltrans SA, also saw a sharp decline, falling from 650,000 lei in June to 273,000 lei in July. Mayor Cosmin Andrei indicated that the administration aims to maintain this downward trend in spending.
These savings may be used to expand free transport benefits for pensioners. Currently, the eligibility threshold is a pension of 3,000 lei; however, the mayor suggested that if savings continue, the threshold could be raised to between 3,500 and 4,000 lei to include more residents.
