Botox duration depends on dosage and technique, not skincare

Plastic surgeon Leandro Faustino explains that the duration of Botox effects is primarily determined by the dosage used, the application technique, and individual patient characteristics rather than topical treatments. While common internet advice suggests that creams or increased hydration can prolong the results, these measures do not biologically extend the period of action of the botulinum toxin.

The toxin works by temporarily reducing communication between nerves and muscles. As the body gradually recovers this function, movement returns. Studies indicate a median duration of approximately four months for the reduction of muscle activity in the area between the eyebrows, though this varies based on muscle strength, the specific area treated, and the patient's biological response.

While skincare routines, sun protection, and avoiding smoking do not extend the toxin's effect, they are recommended to maintain overall skin quality and aesthetic appearance. Beyond facial lines, the toxin is also used to treat excessive sweating in the palms and armpits.
