Bots Overtake Humans in Global Web Traffic, Cloudflare Reports
On June 3, 2026 Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince announced that automated traffic has surpassed human visits for the first time in internet history. Cloudflare’s data showed bots accounted for 57 % of webpage requests, well before the 2027 timeline Prince had previously forecast. The surge is driven by AI agents that crawl, read, and generate content on behalf of users, causing a majority of new English‑language articles to be machine‑produced. Analysts such as Pitchbook’s Rudy Yang noted the rapid rise of AI‑agent traffic, while cybersecurity firms reported a 7,851 % year‑over‑year increase in AI‑driven requests. The shift threatens website revenue models that rely on human pageviews, overloads small publishers’ infrastructure, and floods search results with AI‑written pages, prompting businesses to rethink how they optimise sites for machine audiences.
