Botswana addresses economic vulnerabilities amid diamond slump and rising energy costs
Botswana is facing economic challenges driven by a prolonged slump in the global diamond market, which has strained government revenues and foreign exchange reserves. Vice President and Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe noted that the country’s heavy reliance on diamonds exposes vulnerabilities that monetary policy alone cannot resolve. To moderate exchange-rate volatility, President Duma Boko endorsed maintaining the current Pula exchange-rate framework, which utilizes a currency basket split between the South African rand and the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights (SDR).
Simultaneously, the nation is addressing rising energy costs, including a 9 percent electricity tariff increase scheduled for August 2026. This shift is driving interest in energy independence and alternative power sources. Absa Bank Botswana has introduced green energy loans, offering up to P500,000 in financing for solar installations, to help businesses and individuals mitigate power interruptions and manage rising operational costs.
