Botswana credit rating downgraded by Moody's to Baa2
Moody's has downgraded Botswana's sovereign credit rating from Baa1 to Baa2, marking the second downgrade in less than a year. The agency cited a deterioration in public finances driven by declining revenues from the diamond sector, lower-than-expected receipts from the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), and disappointing returns from new fiscal measures.
Despite the downgrade, the outlook was revised from negative to stable, reflecting a more robust fiscal policy response and the potential for a recovery in diamond revenues. This comes even as the government announced a reduction in the projected 2026 budget deficit to 3.1% of GDP, down from an earlier forecast of 8.9%.
The economic pressure stems from a prolonged downturn in the global diamond market, exacerbated by the rising popularity of laboratory-grown diamonds. Diamonds account for approximately one-third of government revenues and three-quarters of the country's foreign exchange earnings. The country faces structural challenges, including high unemployment rates, as it struggles to diversify its economy away from its heavy dependence on mining.
