Botswana economy grows 8.7% driven by diamond industry rebound
Botswana’s economy has shown signs of a significant rebound, with Statistics Botswana reporting an 8.7% growth rate in the second quarter. This follows a period of contraction and highlights a recovery driven largely by the diamond industry. Rough-diamond output and activity among diamond traders have surged, providing much-needed relief to the national budget.
Despite the growth, officials are urging caution regarding the nation's heavy reliance on gemstone exports. Acting President and Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe noted that while the recovery is encouraging, the country must focus on economic diversification. He emphasized the need to channel capital into productive sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism to build a more resilient economy.
In tandem with economic shifts, authorities are initiating a full-scale overhaul of social welfare programs, which cost approximately P10bn annually. The review aims to improve fiscal stability by rooting out irregularities and ensuring that spending reaches the most deserving citizens.
