Botswana expands economic ties with China and Madagascar
Botswana is significantly expanding its international economic and diplomatic ties through new agreements with China and Madagascar. Following a bilateral visit with Madagascar’s President Michaël Randrianirina, Botswana President Duma Boko announced the removal of visa requirements for Malagasy nationals. This measure aims to boost tourism, trade, and regional mobility.
Simultaneously, Botswana and China have upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. Following meetings between President Boko and President Xi Jinping, the two nations are focusing on increasing trade, particularly in agriculture. The partnership seeks to improve Chinese market access for Botswana’s beef and citrus exports, leveraging China’s zero-tariff treatment for African nations.
The cooperation extends beyond trade into industrial development, including mining, digital technologies, renewable energy, and infrastructure. Botswana aims to utilize Chinese expertise and investment to strengthen its domestic manufacturing capacity and economic diversification.
