Botswana financial leaders advocate for economic diversification and regional market collaboration
Financial and stock exchange leaders in Botswana are advocating for increased economic diversification and regional cooperation to bolster capital markets.
At a recent business gathering in Gaborone, Absa Bank Botswana pledged to support the nation’s economic transformation by financing productive businesses and expanding financial inclusion. The bank’s vision aligns with the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme, which aims to build an enabling ecosystem for startups. Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Gaolathe emphasized the role of entrepreneurs in driving this shift toward a more resilient and inclusive economy.
Simultaneously, the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) is calling for stronger regional collaboration, specifically with the Malawi Stock Exchange, to encourage small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to list on stock exchanges. BSE officials noted that limited awareness of capital market benefits remains a challenge for many businesses. They suggested that partnerships between regional exchanges could facilitate dual listings and create more accessible pathways for companies to access long-term capital beyond their domestic markets.
