Botswana Power Corporation faces massive losses from cable theft

The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is facing significant financial and operational challenges due to a surge in cable theft and infrastructure vandalism. The corporation reported more than 1,800 new theft incidents this year, with total losses exceeding P100 million over the last five years. These losses stem from stolen cables, necessary repairs, replacements, and operational disruptions caused by unplanned power outages.

According to BPC Marketing and Communications Manager Kefilwe Batsalelwang, theft incidents are widespread, with particularly high levels recorded in Gaborone, Mogoditshane/Mmopane, Kanye, Molepolole, and Maun. Government data presented in Parliament indicated that between 2021 and 2025, BPC recorded 11,491 cable-theft incidents.

In addition to the impact on the electricity grid, the theft of infrastructure is also affecting water and telecommunications systems. The illicit scrap-metal trade is cited as a primary driver behind the increased frequency of these crimes.
