Botswana seeks economic diversification amid diamond market decline

Botswana is attempting to diversify its economy as the global diamond market faces significant challenges. The rise of lab-grown diamonds and declining global demand have impacted the nation's primary revenue source. According to the International Monetary Fund, Botswana’s real GDP contracted by 3% in 2024, with mining production falling by 24% and diamond trade decreasing by 34%.

To counter these shifts, the government under Duma Boko is prioritizing a new business climate focused on the private sector, entrepreneurship, and investment. One strategic initiative is the ‘Diamonds & Delta Tours’ program, which seeks to link the diamond industry with the country’s luxury tourism and conservation sectors.

By integrating mineral wealth with high-end tourism, officials aim to market Botswana’s diamonds as part of a broader luxury proposition. This approach, supported by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, intends to connect international industry leaders directly with the country’s natural heritage and local communities, moving beyond viewing diamonds solely as commercial commodities.
