Botswana's P423 million PKI project collapses, raising digital security concerns

A Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) system intended to secure digital identities and enable encrypted government services in Botswana has stalled despite a P423 million investment. The project, originally led by the Ministry of Communications and Infrastructure, was transferred to the Directorate of Intelligence and Security, after which progress halted and the system remains non‑operational. During a Public Accounts Committee hearing, Permanent Secretary Cecil Masiga highlighted the lack of accountability and an unclear timeline for completion, prompting calls for recovery of the funds and responsibility.
