Botun residents sue Montenegro for 1.1 million euros over pollution

Forty-four residents of Botun have filed a lawsuit against the state of Montenegro, seeking a total of 1.1 million euros in damages. The plaintiffs, represented by attorney Danilo Vujanović, filed the suit with the Basic Court in Podgorica on September 30.

The lawsuit alleges that long-term exposure to pollution from red mud pools has violated the residents' right to life and posed serious health risks. Vujanović stated that the state has been aware of the environmental issues for decades but failed to implement necessary protections.

Evidence cited in the case includes documentation from the Center for Ecotoxicological Testing and the Agency for Environmental Protection, which indicate excessive concentrations of pollutants in the soil, air, and groundwater. While the Montenegrin government declared the remediation of the red mud pools an absolute priority in January, Vujanović noted that similar decisions were made in 2016 and 2021 without adequate follow-up action.
