Bouchra Khalili presents migration and worker history at La Casa Encendida

Franco-Moroccan artist Bouchra Khalili is presenting her work at La Casa Encendida in Madrid. Her project, ‘The Circle Project’, explores themes of invisibility among migrant populations and draws inspiration from Moroccan traditions of oral storytelling in public spaces.

Khalili has been developing this project since 2012. Her work investigates the activities of Arab worker movements in 1970s France, focusing on their struggle for equal rights and their response to xenophobia. Due to a lack of existing documentation regarding these groups, Khalili has constructed her own archive to examine how absence can be represented through video and art.

Her recent recognition includes an award at the Sharjah Biennial in 2023, the same year she was featured in an exhibition at MACBA in Barcelona.
