Boussouma abandoned by residents due to armed group pressure
The town of Boussouma, located approximately 77 kilometers northeast of Ouagadougou, has been largely abandoned by its residents due to the progressive advancement and installation of armed groups. This mass exodus has transformed the once-active community into a ghost town, with displaced families seeking refuge in neighboring areas or the outskirts of the capital.
Analysts suggest the security breakdown is linked to recent administrative and traditional reforms. The implementation of law n°002-2026/ALT regarding the status of customary chieftaincy, alongside changes to the Royal Court of Boussouma, has reportedly weakened local social cohesion and traditional intelligence networks. This institutional vacuum is viewed as having created a vulnerability that armed groups exploited to gain control of the area, marking a significant territorial retreat for the state near the capital.
