Bovril cattle producers report surge in livestock theft

Livestock producers in Bovril, located in the La Paz department of Entre Ríos, are reporting a surge in cattle theft and clandestine slaughtering, describing the area as a “liberated zone” for criminals.

One producer, Álvaro Prevero, reported losing nine animals—six cows and three calves—within a 30-day period, with losses estimated between 15 and 18 million pesos. The theft involves a specific modus operandi where criminals extract viscera, heads, and limbs, transporting the remaining carcasses similarly to large game hunting.

The Federación Agraria Argentina (FAA) has intervened to address the growing sense of impunity and fear among local producers. Residents claim that while authorities may know the identities of those responsible, arrests often only target minor intermediaries in the illegal sale chain. Producers have expressed frustration over judicial delays in authorizing raids, which they claim has allowed the thefts to escalate.
