Bowdens Silver mine hearing extended amid Mudgee housing concerns

The Independent Planning Commission (IPC) has extended the public hearing for the proposed Bowdens Silver open-cut mine at Lue to three days. The hearing, which follows significant community interest and nearly 100 registered speakers, will now take place from October 14 to 16 at the Mudgee Showground main pavilion. The deadline for written submissions has also been pushed to October 25.

The Mid-Western Regional Council has raised serious concerns regarding the project's impact on local infrastructure. Development director Alina Azar warned that the mine's construction workforce could exacerbate an existing housing crisis. The council noted that the project might coincide with a projected peak of 5,000 to 6,000 renewable energy workers in the region around 2029-30. Currently, the region reports only 60 available houses, leading to concerns about water resources and the local tourism economy.
