Bowdens Silver mine project faces community opposition at public hearings
Public hearings have commenced regarding the proposed Bowdens Silver open-cut mine near Lue. The project, which seeks to extract up to 30 million tonnes of silver, lead, and zinc ore over a 23-year period, is currently under review by the Independent Planning Commission (IPC).
Local residents and community members have voiced significant opposition during the proceedings. Primary concerns include potential lead exposure, impacts on livestock, water quality, flooding risks, and the long-term reputation of the Mudgee region. Specifically, community members questioned the adequacy of health monitoring and expressed anxiety regarding the impact on families, schools, farming, and the local tourism industry.
While Bowdens Silver managing director Jo Battershill presented the economic and strategic benefits of the mine, opponents argued that the environmental and health risks could permanently alter the community. The Mudgee Wine Association also participated in the hearings to address potential implications for the local wine industry.
