India box office surges in July driven by international films
India’s domestic box office saw a significant surge in July 2026, driven largely by international cinema and major regional releases. According to Ormax Media, the month grossed Rs. 1,582 crore, marking the second-best month of the year.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” emerged as the month’s top performer, contributing 40 percent of the total gross. The film has become the highest-grossing international film in India, overtaking “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and has reached a worldwide collection of Rs. 1,760 crore, making it the highest-grossing film of 2026 globally.
Other major contributors to the July totals included the Tamil film “Jana Nayagan,” the international release “The Odyssey,” and the Hindi film “Dhamaal 4.” Together, these four films accounted for 81 percent of the month’s total collections.
The data highlights a shifting landscape in the Indian market: for the first time in 2026, the market share of Hindi cinema fell below 40 percent, while international cinema reached a record-high 17 percent share. Cumulative collections for international films in 2026 have surpassed Rs. 1,424 crore, putting the year on track to potentially break the 2019 record of Rs. 1,595 crore.
