Mayo tragedy: 12-year-old boy killed in train and car collision

A 12-year-old boy, Eoin Doyle, died following a collision between a train and a car at a user-operated level crossing in Kiltybo, near Ballyhaunis, County Mayo. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, September 3, shortly before 9:00 pm.

Eoin was traveling in the vehicle with his father after returning from GAA training when the 18:15 Heuston to Westport service struck the car. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, a man in his late 40s, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

All passengers on the train disembarked safely and onward transport was arranged. Iarnród Éireann expressed its deepest sympathies to the family. Local sports clubs, including Ballyhaunis GAA and Cloonfad United FC, have suspended all activities and matches as a mark of respect.

An Garda Síochána has launched an investigation, with forensic collision investigators expected to examine the scene. Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage from the area between 8:15 pm and 9:15 pm to come forward.
