Boyacá hosts farmers' fair as Ecuador prepares for El Niño
In Boyacá, Colombia, the Agroferia Campesina has launched in the municipality of Paipa, bringing together over 200 small and medium-scale producers. Organized by the Departmental Agriculture Secretariat, the event seeks to bypass intermediaries and facilitate direct sales between farmers and local households. Participants from the Sugamuxi, Tundama, and Centro provinces are offering various products, including potatoes, Andean tubers, cold-climate fruits, and artisanal dairy products, as well as processed goods like jams and specialty coffee.
Meanwhile, in Ecuador, authorities are preparing for the potential impact of the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to affect food production between late 2026 and early 2027. The National Risk Management Secretariat has placed 17 provinces on orange alert. Coastal provinces such as Guayas, Los Ríos, Manabí, Santa Elena, and El Oro face high risks of flooding, threatening crops like rice, corn, bananas, and cocoa. Conversely, the Austro and Central Sierra regions face risks of water stress due to lack of rainfall, which could impact the production of vegetables, fruits, and basic grains.
