Boyacá panela crisis endangers hundreds of thousands of families
The panela sector in the Hoya del Río Suárez area of Boyacá faces a deep economic crisis. Producers are squeezed by low market prices, high input costs, informal distribution, competition from sugar‑adulterated panela, labour shortages and a volatile dollar, leaving many operating at a loss.
Fedepanela Boyacá president Alex León warned that the losses are forcing farmers to abandon their fields, breaking generational succession and pushing vulnerable families toward urban centres. The region, which accounts for about 60 % of Colombia’s panela output, underpins the livelihoods of roughly 350,000 families nationwide.
Representatives of the growers' union met with Agriculture Minister Indalecio Dangond to craft a public‑policy agenda aimed at stabilising the sector. The plan targets stronger marketing, technological upgrades to trapiches, expanded technical assistance and the promotion of domestic consumption and exports.
