Boyacá's Economy Concentrated in Ten Municipalities, DANE Report Shows

The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) released a 2024 report indicating that ten municipalities in the Colombian department of Boyacá account for about 60 % of its total economic output. Tunja leads with 13.3 % of the value added, followed by Sogamoso at 10.6 % and Duitama at 8.5 %. The remaining municipalities in the top ten are Puerto Boyacá, Nobsa, Santa María, Chiquinquirá, Tibasosa, Paipa and Tuta.

Compared with 2019, the share of the three leading cities has fallen slightly, and Puerto Boyacá’s contribution dropped from 9.2 % to 7.1 % due to weaker oil activity. Nobsa stands out with a 5.3 % share, equivalent to the combined output of the 56 smallest municipalities, thanks to a strong manufacturing sector. At the opposite end, towns such as La Victoria, Pisba, Guacamayas and Busbanzá each contribute less than 0.07 % of the department’s wealth, reflecting persistent territorial inequities. Economic analyst Jacinto Pineda highlighted the need for policies that narrow the gap between industrialised urban centres and rural economies.
