Boydar Bozhanov alleges scandal over Iliana Yotova pardons

Boydar Bozhanov, co-chairman of Democratic Bulgaria, has accused the ruling authorities of attempting to cover up a scandal involving pardons granted by Vice President Iliana Yotova to drug traffickers.

Following a failed National Assembly session intended to hear from Ministry of Interior and State Agency for National Security representatives, Bozhanov raised concerns regarding the pardon of Ognyan Atanasov, known as the ‘Pirin Escobar’. He further alleged that another individual, a three-time drug offender, continued criminal activities after being released for medical treatment under a pardon.

Bozhanov questioned why a prison fight involving Atanasov was not reported to the Presidency. He noted that Maria Pavlova, the Deputy Minister of Justice responsible for prisons, maintains close ties to President Rumen Radev and Vice President Yotova. The opposition leader called for an inspection of the Pardon Commission, citing inconsistent criteria and a lack of expertise among its members.
