Boyko Borisov: Bulgarian govt mimics work on Belene nuclear plant

Leader of the GER‑B opposition, Boyko Borisov, accused Prime Minister Rumen Radев’s government of “mimicking work” as it pursues a restart of the Belene nuclear project. He said the government’s statements shift daily, making the proposals unclear, and noted that building a Russian‑designed reactor is now impossible because of EU sanctions.

Borisov recalled that his former government purchased the two Belene reactors, which remain state‑owned, and proposed the most viable option is a joint‑venture with Ukraine, which already has much of the plant’s infrastructure. He also mentioned possible relocation of the reactors to the Kozloduy plant or other uses, but stressed the need for strong Western investment.

The opposition leader criticised the lack of information on the gas‑operator Botas deal with Turkey, warned that the budget deficit could trigger EU “red‑card” procedures, and urged a united right‑wing candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
