Boyko Borisov criticizes Bulgarian economic and tax policies
Boyko Borisov, leader of the GERB party, has issued sharp criticisms against the economic policies of the ruling Progressive Bulgaria government during a meeting in Plovdiv. Borisov warned that current fiscal measures, including proposed taxes on the excess profits of banks, telecommunications, and insurers, will ultimately be passed on to consumers through higher prices and more expensive credit.
Borisov also raised concerns regarding fuel stability, arguing that recent legislative changes allowing refineries to export crude oil could create artificial shortages and drive up domestic prices. He characterized the government's approach as populist and detrimental to the market economy.
In a separate analysis, former Deputy Finance Minister Lyudmila Elkova stated that Bulgaria's budget deficit is primarily driven by excessive spending rather than insufficient revenue. She expressed skepticism regarding the government's ability to meet optimistic revenue targets through one-time measures, such as the proposed excess profits tax, noting that such practices create economic uncertainty and instability.
