Boyko Borisov urges Bulgarian cabinet to shrink budget deficit to 3%

GERB leader Boyko Borisov said his party will not oppose the government if the cabinet withdraws the current budget draft and presents a new plan with a deficit limited to 3%. He criticised the present proposal for excessive spending that will ultimately be borne by taxpayers, noting that GERB had abstained during the first reading to give the cabinet a chance to revise the figures but will now vote against it.

Borisov warned that Bulgaria faces a European Commission procedure for excessive deficit and called the budget a “red card” demanding change. He also commented on the Belene nuclear project, proposing a joint venture with an external partner to build the plant and share future profits, and suggested relocating the reactors to the Kozloduy facility. Ahead of the presidential election, Borisov urged right‑wing parties to unite behind a single candidate, arguing that a united ticket is the only way to stop a one‑person rule.
