Boyko Borisov announces shift to conservative policy for GERB
Boyko Borisov, leader of the GERB party, has announced a strategic shift to return the organization to its roots as a strong right-wing, conservative political force. Speaking at a forum in Burgas, Borisov emphasized that the party must distance itself from populism and the trend of increasing public spending through debt. He stated that GERB will prioritize financial discipline, entrepreneurship, and support for the productive business sector rather than participating in the distribution of public funds.
Borisov also issued warnings regarding the current political landscape, criticizing the ruling Progressive Bulgaria party for allegedly threatening local mayors to secure their allegiance. He predicted that Progressive Bulgaria would face fragmentation before the upcoming local elections. Additionally, he criticized government measures against rising fuel prices, such as the 50 euro one-time aid for vulnerable citizens, arguing that such measures are ineffective and driven by populism.
In the context of the upcoming presidential elections, Borisov noted that GERB is not rushing to nominate a candidate, preferring to wait for a figure capable of upholding the institution's responsibilities. Meanwhile, presidential candidate Andrey Gurov emphasized the need for an independent head of state who can act as a corrective to the executive and legislative branches to protect citizen interests.
