Boyle County, KY and Marion County, IN Impose Data Center Moratoriums

Boyle County, Kentucky, approved a one‑year moratorium on new data‑center projects, halting all related zoning, conditional‑use, site‑plan and building permits for 12 months while the county plans a comprehensive review of location, infrastructure and environmental impacts.

In Indianapolis, Indiana, the Marion County City‑County Council moved an amended zoning ordinance to the full council that bars approvals for any new data center until December 31 2027. The measure creates a new special zoning class (SU‑47) with standards for site setbacks, noise, water use, waste disposal and de‑commissioning, and it directs the Department of Metropolitan Development to draft permanent rules. Mayor Joe Hogsett publicly supported the pause, citing the need for expert input and community engagement.
