Boyle Heights Cold-Storage Warehouse Fire Continues as Firefighters Battle Seven-Day Blaze
A fire ignited last week at a 500,000‑square‑foot cold‑storage warehouse operated by Lineage Logistics in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. The blaze is thought to have started while the building’s solar‑panel array was being tested, though the official cause remains under investigation. Thick foam insulation, high metal racks holding roughly 85 million pounds of frozen food, and flammable packaging have made the fire exceptionally hard to suppress, forcing firefighters to dismantle walls, use drones and high‑capacity water streams, and keep a crew of about 150 personnel on site around the clock.
The fire has produced dense smoke that triggered an extended particulate‑matter advisory for the area. Residents were urged to stay indoors, seal windows, turn off air‑conditioning, and wear N95 or P100 masks. The city and Lineage Logistics have supplied air purifiers, masks, food and water to affected households. Mayor Karen Bass highlighted the concentration of such facilities in Black and brown communities, calling for a review of environmental‑justice risks. A similar Lineage facility in Washington endured a 60‑day fire in 2024, underscoring the broader safety challenges of large cold‑storage operations.
