Boyle Heights residents face stench and pests after warehouse fire
Residents of the Boyle Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles are facing severe health and environmental concerns following a fire at a large cold-storage warehouse in mid-June. The fire left behind approximately 39 million kilograms (85-88 million pounds) of rotting food, including beef, pork, poultry, and seafood.
Nearly two months after the incident, the area is plagued by an unbearable stench, swarms of flies, and reports of large rats. A city-commissioned inspection report warned that high temperatures and waste are accelerating the breeding of flies that could transmit infections to humans and animals. Local businesses have reported decreased foot traffic due to the odor and pests.
Lineage Logistics, the company operating the warehouse, stated that about 80% of the food waste has been removed. However, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass criticized the company's response as insufficient and has issued public health and safety violation notices, including daily fines of $500. The city has set an August 13 deadline for the completion of the cleanup and has halted plans to rebuild the warehouse until health and safety concerns are fully addressed.
