Bozen records record-breaking 32 tropical nights

Bozen has recorded a record-breaking summer in 2026, experiencing 32 tropical nights where temperatures remained above 20 degrees Celsius. This surpasses the previous record of 29 tropical nights set in 2015.

According to climate monitoring by Eurac Research, Bozen now experiences approximately ten more tropical nights per year than it did in the 1960s. The lack of nighttime cooling prevents the body from undergoing the necessary thermal drop required to trigger melatonin production, leading to shorter sleep duration and reduced deep sleep phases.

Beyond sleep disruption, the heat poses risks to physical and mental health. Research indicates that temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius can decrease psychological and physical well-being, with higher reports of anxiety and depressive symptoms. The prolonged heat also places continuous strain on the cardiovascular system, particularly for elderly or vulnerable populations.
