Bozhidar Bozhyanov: Opposition seeks unifying presidential candidate in Bulgaria
Deputy chairman of the Democratic Bulgaria parliamentary group, Bozhidar Bozhyanov, told BNT that the opposition’s goal ahead of the presidential election is to nominate a candidate who can unite the country rather than represent a narrow party line. He said the preferred candidate should be independent of party politics and free from past mistakes.
Bozhyanov highlighted former MP and caretaker prime minister Andrey Gurov as an example of a non‑partisan figure who acted in a state‑oriented manner. He also commented on the recent dismissal of Interior Ministry Secretary Georgi Kandev, noting that the ministry requires backing from both the minister and the broader state leadership to function effectively.
Regarding the “Petrokhan” investigation, Bozhyanov rejected accusations made by MP Atanas Rusev, calling them fabricated. He said Democratic Bulgaria has repeatedly asked for all police and prosecutor information on the case to be disclosed to parliament, emphasizing that the party has no involvement in any alleged misconduct.
