ExxonMobil posts $14.5 B profit as Guyana protests demand full oil revenues
ExxonMobil reported second‑quarter 2026 earnings of $14.5 billion, more than double the profit a year earlier, driven by tight global oil supplies and record output from Guyana’s Stabroek Block, which is producing about 900,000 barrels per day. The company said it has paid off $55 billion of development and operating costs and expects its cost‑bank to be cleared within two years.
At the same time, Guyanese citizens took to the streets to protest the handling of the MV Barima disaster inquiry and to demand that the government enforce the 2016 Production Sharing Agreement, which would give Guyana a 50 percent share of oil revenues after the contractor recovers its costs. Opposition MP Saiku Andrews called for a halt to new Exxon projects until the country receives its full profit share. Workers on the project are reported to be paid $1.66 an hour.
Exxon’s CEO Darren Woods described the results as “truly in a league of our own,” while the protests highlighted growing public pressure over profit‑sharing and environmental concerns in the rapidly expanding oil sector.
