BP and Louisiana reach $350 million Deepwater Horizon settlement

BP and the State of Louisiana have reached an agreement to accelerate payments related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Under the terms signed by Governor Jeff Landry, Attorney General Liz Murrill, and BP CEO Meg O'Neill, BP will convert its remaining economic damages settlement obligations into a single lump-sum payment of approximately $350 million.

This arrangement replaces a multi-year payout structure that would have seen the state receive $373 million in equal annual installments over the next seven years. By opting for the accelerated payout, Louisiana secures immediate access to the funds. This amount represents more than 20% of BP’s remaining total financial obligations to the five Gulf Coast states established under the 2015 framework.

Beyond the restructuring of payments, the pact resolves all outstanding coastal zone lawsuits and similar claims brought against BP by local parishes. These legal actions originated from the April 2010 explosion off the Louisiana coast. Governor Landry stated that the resolution of these legacy lawsuits is intended to signal that Louisiana welcomes economic growth and job creation.
