BP has appointed Ian Tyler as its permanent chairman, effective immediately. Tyler, the former CEO of Balfour Beatty, had been serving as interim chair since May 2026 following the sudden removal of his predecessor, Albert Manifold.

Manifold was ousted from his position less than eight months after taking office due to concerns regarding corporate governance, oversight, and conduct. While Manifold has disputed the company’s characterization of his departure, calling it a ‘false narrative,’ the company cited serious issues regarding his management style and behavior.

This leadership change occurs as BP, under CEO Meg O’Neill, undergoes a strategic shift to refocus on oil and gas assets and improve operational discipline. Alongside Tyler’s appointment, senior independent director Amanda Blanc announced she will not seek re-election at the 2027 annual general meeting and will step down once a successor is found.

Tyler brings extensive experience to the role, having worked with over 15 chief executives across the energy, natural resources, and engineering sectors. He currently serves as the chair of Grafton Group and a senior independent director at Anglo American.
