BP p.l.c. sees surge in options trading amid profit growth

BP p.l.c. has experienced a significant surge in options trading activity, with call options volume increasing by 583% to 128,060. This follows a period of notable financial performance, including a 143% jump in Q2 underlying replacement-cost profit to $5.73bn.

Despite the profit growth, the company faces several strategic and leadership challenges. Under CEO Meg O’Neill, BP is shifting its focus back toward core oil and gas businesses by winding down certain low-carbon investments. The company also manages a net debt exceeding $22bn and recent boardroom turbulence involving former chair Albert Manifold.

From an investment perspective, BP shares have seen a price increase of approximately 73% since August 2021, with total returns being higher when dividends are reinvested. Analysts have recently adjusted their outlooks, with Freedom Capital upgrading the stock from a ‘strong sell’ to a ‘hold’ rating.
