BPA contamination found in many canned food products
An investigation by Öko-Test magazine has revealed significant contamination of Bisphenol A (BPA) in canned food packaging. Out of 52 food items tested, 42 showed high or very high levels of the chemical.
BPA is an endocrine disruptor that can interfere with the hormonal system and impact fertility. While many manufacturers use BPA-free coatings for the interior of cans, the chemical can transfer to the food from the exterior coatings during the production stacking process.
The European Union has implemented regulatory measures to address these risks. As of January 2025, the intentional use of BPA in food contact materials is prohibited in the EU. Furthermore, a ban on the sale of cans featuring BPA-containing exterior coatings is set to take effect in January 2028.
